Our Mission Narrative

En Español

Our Lord Jesus calls us to proclaim the Good News. In response to this call, we at St. Alphonsus Parish share God’s love and truth through our service, words, and relationships. Led by the Spirit, we build our joyful community upon prayer and worship, a missionary spirit, and prayerful stewardship of the gifts we have received.

Our mission is rooted in Christ, our brother. Through our beautiful liturgy and worship, and principally in celebrating the Eucharist, we unite ourselves in the body of Christ and are nourished for our missionary journey. We actively participate in the sacramental life of the Church, personal devotions, and prayers to help us grow in holiness and build a community enlivened by the Spirit. Our prayer and worship remind us that as children of God, we are to go forth serving one another.

Sent forth with a missionary spirit, we work to imitate Christ by loving and serving others, especially the sick and the poor. We become evangelists of the Church, not by word alone, but by promoting and engaging in hands-on service, wherein our very actions radiate the love of God. Through our religious education programs, we grow a profound knowledge of the faith, carrying it with zeal into the world. In our community social events, we forge new relationships, share our story, and support one another in times of joy and suffering, alike. Through our family ministry, we strive to actively support, engage, and unify the families of our school and parish in a sense of shared mission. In all things, we spread the Good News through our Christian witness, inviting others to join our growing community.

Our mission requires constant discernment of spiritual stewardship. We are mindful of the many blessings we have received and the tradition we build upon at St. Alphonsus. St. Peter encourages us: “as each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10). We are grateful for our blessings and see them not as assets to protect, but as treasures and talents to grow and share. We celebrate our diversity as a witness to God’s infinite goodness. Though diverse in culture and language, interests and needs, gifts and vocations, we work together toward our unified goal of building a community of disciples that go forth spreading the Gospel.

We find in our patron, St. Alphonsus of Liguori, an inspiring model for living this mission in our world. A renowned artist, composer, intellectual and spiritual leader, St. Alphonsus shows us how to lead authentic Christian lives. As St. Alphonsus explained, “Nothing else is required than to act toward God, in the midst of your occupations, as you do, even when busy, toward those who love you and whom you love.”

In his tradition, we cultivate an appreciation for the arts through our vibrant music ministry, relationship with the Athenaeum Theater, and school curriculum. Our commitment to music and the arts remains a unifying thread within our community and is a “pearl of great price.” Alphonsus Academy and Center for the Arts, is an invaluable gift of the parish and wider community. It is a concrete example of our call to develop the whole child – socially, emotionally and intellectually. In this way, our young people are prepared to lead lives filled with the Spirit and rooted in Christ. Similarly we develop spiritual and intellectual leaders of all ages through our religious education programs, engaging those new to our Catholic faith as well as those seeking to deepen their understanding and practice of faith. We value these gifts and human resources and promote their ongoing vitality and growth within the parish.

This is the mission Christ entrusted to his disciples; it is the mission of the Church throughout history and it continues today. With humility, hope, and confidence in the Spirit’s guidance, we dedicate ourselves to the new evangelization, building a vibrant community of disciples connected through inspired worship, Christian service, and spiritual growth.
